‘Kingdom’ Season 3: Special episode release date announced and what to expect – what’s new on Netflix
After another damn good season of Kingdom, fans will be hungrier to see the Korean horror series return for a third. We’re still waiting for Netflix to confirm that a third season is in progress, but we can look forward to the hour-long special episode âAshin of the Northâ arriving in July 2021.
Kingdom is an original South Korean horror series from Netflix written by Kim Eun-hee. The series is based on the book Land of the Gods, which was also written by Kim Eun-hee. First arriving in 2019, the horror series has since grown into one of the most popular non-English titles available to stream on Netflix.
TO Kingdom been renewed for season three?
Netflix Official Renewal Status: Pending (Last Updated: 04/06/2021)
We are more than a year since the release of Kingdom season two on Netflix, and unfortunately we still haven’t heard that the series has been renewed for season three.
Our confidence that Kingdom Will Come Back has grown significantly after confirmation that the series will return with a special bonus episode, exploring the character of Gianna Jun, played by Jun Ji-hyun. It has been confirmed that Kingdom: North Ashin will arrive on Netflix on July 23, 2021.
Despite the lack of renewal, we are still confident that the series will return for a third season. Our confidence has only been strengthened since screenwriter Kim Eun-hee and director Park in-I were interviewed by The Hollywood Reporter.
When asked how many stories and numbers she has left, Kim Eun-hee replied the following:
Oddly enough, Kingdom is a series that gives me more energy as I write it. The cast and crew all have great chemistry, and there is so much more to say. If viewers allow it, I would love to see it develop even until season 10.
The last thing we heard from Kim Eun-hee was that she was discussing the role Jun Ji Hyun might have to play in season three:
I think Jun Ji Hyun will become a central role alongside the main characters in seasons one and two.
Fans, and indeed ourselves, are excited to read how excited Kim Eun-hee is about the future of Kingdom. Ten seasons are incredibly ambitious, but given the popularity of the horror series, who can say it couldn’t hit double digits?
What to expect from season three of Kingdom
Below, we’ll discuss what we can expect to see from the third season of Kingdom.
* Spoilers for Kingdom season two *
Outbreak in the North
After seven years and three months since Prince Chang faked his death, we learned from Young-Shin, during a meeting with Cho Beom-Pal, that His Royal Highness had investigated the resurrection plant, hunting it in all of Korea. We learned that the resurrection plant had grown in areas all over Korea and that a mysterious seller on the Sino-Korean border had sold it to ordinary people.
Taking Prince Chang, Seobi, and his guard north, they discovered an abandoned village. After investigation, they quickly discovered that the village had been infected. After sending one of the living dead, the new ringing of bells among the trees indicated that more infected were on the way.
With only three trained fighters among them, from what we have seen, it is highly likely that Prince Chang will have to withdraw from the north. Without the proper number of soldiers to take out the zombies, there could be another plague in the north.
Who is the plant seller?
Following the mysterious vendor north, it was finally revealed that the person trying to spread the plague was female. His motives are not clear at this point, but as one of the peasants revealed, he had purchased the resurrection factory on the China-Korea border, so that it could work for the Ming dynasty. .
The intention could be to annihilate the people of Korea and then allow Chinese forces to easily conquer.
Alternatively, she may just want to watch the world burn.
The new undead prince?
Although he removed the worms from the young prince when he was a baby, at least one of the parasites remained in his system, sleeping until his brain had grown enough for him to take over.
So far, all we know is that the worm carrying the infection has spread to the Prince’s brain. Considering the fact that he’s been dormant for seven years, this may have a different impact on the young royal compared to the other victims.
Personally, it would be too easy for an infection to claim the prince, turn him into a foolish monster, and spread the plague throughout the palace walls. It is likely that we will see a new form of contamination, which could corrupt his mind until eventually turning him into a smarter and even deadlier zombie.
Will a cure ever be found?
Seobi had spent the better part of seven years trying to find a cure for the plague of the living dead. Other than the discovery that immersing a victim in water destroys worms, very little progress has been made.
In his research, Seobi was able to pull together everything we knew about the virus;
- Worms are affected by weather conditions, favoring cooler temperatures over heat, but are very volatile when exposed to extreme heat.
- The living dead slept during the spring and summer months
- In the fall and winter, the living dead are only active at night when temperatures drop.
- After the winter solstice until the first day of spring, the dead remain active day and night.
- Immersing victims in water before the infection sets in will destroy the worms inside the body
Sadly, Seobi was wrong about the immunity of the newborns, as the worms slept in the prince even after submerging his wounds.
Seobi’s research has been left in the hands of Cho Beom-Pal, in the event of another outbreak, which may arrive sooner than expected.
Kim Eun-hee update
In the same chat where screenwriter Kim Eun-hee opened up about Jun Ji Hyun’s role in Kingdom, she revealed a bit of what we can expect from season three:
Season 1 told the story of hunger and Season 2 told the story of blood. If Netflix agrees, I want season three to tell the story of resentment. Season two drew attention to the concept of “temperature” and I think if the story were to move north, the various ecosystems in the north would act as a clue.
Cast news for Kingdom Season three
We said goodbye to many of the cast during the second season, many sadly falling victim to the plague of the living dead.
One cast member we’ll definitely see more of for Season 3 will be Jun Ji Hyun. Although this name may be unknown to some, the South Korean actress was seen in the closing seconds of Kingdom season two, revealing that she is the culprit for spreading the Resurrection Flower in Korea.
It was revealed at the end of 2019 that Jun Ji Hyun had been chosen, but her role had been kept a tightly-guarded secret. We can now see why, as its casting almost confirms a third season of Kingdom.
The cast members we expect to return for season three are:
|Role||Actor actress||Where have I seen / heard them before?|
|Crown Prince Chang||Ju ji hoon||Asure: the city of madness | Antiques | The spy gone north|
|Seo-Bi||Bae Doo-Na||Sens8 | Cloud Atlas | The host|
|Young-Tibia||Kim Sung Kyu||The outlaws | Tunnel | The accidental detective|
|Jo Beom-Pal||Jun Suk-Ho||Strong Woman Do Bong-Soon | Intruder | Lucid dream|
|Moo Young’s wife||Ahn Eun Jin||Hospital Reading List | alien from hell | The crowned clown|
We’ll make sure to keep you up to date with all the latest news and information for the third season of Kingdom.
When can we expect the filming of the third season of Kingdom?
The global pandemic has been the biggest obstacle to the Original’s future, as has been the case with several Netflix Originals that have seen delays like Grace and Frankie, or cancellations like GLOW.
With no confirmed news of Kingdom’s return for a season 3, it’s hard to speculate on when filming will begin.
When can we expect to see Kingdom season three on Netflix?
As we speculated above, Covid-19 could have a huge impact on the production of the third season, which means we could see the series delayed by at least a few months.
It’s less and less likely that we will see Kingdom return to any title in 2021. At the earliest, we might hope the series will return to Netflix now is 2022.
How many episodes will season three have?
We have always known that Kingdom had been pushed from eight episodes to twelve, but plans for a third season might not have been considered without the overwhelming popularity.
Now that we’re in uncharted territory, we might see even more episodes of Kingdom. We would definitely like to see more, but the cost of making Kingdom is extremely expensive. Netflix can often be strict with the number of episodes in an original, so don’t be surprised to see the series return with six more episodes.
While we would like to see more than six episodes of Kingdom in season three having more zombie horror is more than enough for us.
