“The Acolyte” Showrunner Talks About Influence Of “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace”
The Acolyte showrunner Leslye Headland discussed the impact Star Wars: The Phantom Menace had on his career.
Leslye Headland is currently developing The Acolyte for Disney Plus, a Star Wars series in the last days of the High Republic. Details are relatively thin on the series, but this will be one of the many Star wars live-action series that Disney commissioned following the success of The Mandalorian.
Best known for creating the Netflix sci-fi comedy series Russian doll, Headland revealed in an interview with The Wrap that she has always been a Star wars fan. In reality, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace seems to have had a profound impact on the trajectory of his career.
“The reason I liked it personally was that I was 18 when ‘Phantom Menace’ came out, and I was a very, very big fan of ‘Star Wars’. I’m still a huge ‘Star Wars’ fan, but at that point, right after the reissues and being in high school, it sort of coincided with a time when I was finding out who I was sexually, I was discovering who I was artistically, I was sort of realizing what I wanted to do with my life. And then this big, huge cinematic event, a cultural event happened, it was “The Phantom Menace.”
Despite the less than ideal reception that Star Wars: The Phantom Menace So, Headland explained how interesting it was that George Lucas technically started the series at that point, that is, Anakin was so young and the Jedi were on the rise but still faced to conflicts.
“I know there have been various reactions to this. And certainly, there were a lot of people who had grown up with the original trilogy who were disappointed with it. But actually, I was very intrigued as to why George Lucas pitched us at that point.
The promontory The Acolyte takes place about 200 years before The phantom menace, at a particularly peaceful time. And while she doesn’t explicitly mention it, she does explain how interesting it would be to explore what happened in the universe before Lucas started The Phantom Menace. It is quite possible that The Acolyte could directly lead (or tease) to The phantom menace.
“I kind of wondered, but what happened to make it happen? This is kind of where my “Star Wars” fan brain was like, “How did we get here? And why are the Jedi like that? When they are in power, why do they act this way and how come they don’t have the reaction you would think they would have to Anakin’s presence and what Qui-Gon Jinn said of the passion he feels at the thought of training her and bringing her to the fold. It’s as if even the discovery of Darth Maul is kind of met with that kind of “Hm, interesting” feeling. So I just think for me my brain always buzzed around that area and I wondered what was going on here – or what was going on here.
